Jobs in SA: the way forward

The South African government has set itself a target of slashing the country’s unemployment rate by 10% -- from 25% to 15% -- in the next 10 years. The target, ultimately, will be to create 5 million new jobs in the next decade. Many questions about how these jobs will be created, and in deed in which industries, have been raised since government first mooted its New Growth Path. The ruling ANC is confident that this can be done, and has set specific targets which will see many key sectors of the economy expanding beyond their current bounds. These jobs will be achieved through five clusters of "job drivers", namely:
  • Infrastructure (energy, transport, water, housing and ICT)
  • Main economic sectors (agriculture agro-processing, mining and beneficiation, IPAP2, tourism etc)
  • Social capital (social economy and the public sector)
  • New economies, which include the green economy and
  • Knowledge economy (which includes rural development and African region development)
The table below shows which industries government has targeted in its plan to cut the unemployment rate from 25% to 15%:

To boost this plan, the ANC has instructed all government departments to find ways of creating employment. The groundwork now has to be done in various spheres of government in order to create an environment conducive for job creation. The things to keep an eye on include infrastructure development, education and health, as these are the fundamentals off all healthy, thriving economies.
