Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System Date: 01 Aug 2008 Title: Conference to increase commitment to HIV, AIDS prevention -------------------- By Gabi Khumalo Mexico - The 17th International AIDS Conference aims to influence leaders, including key policy makers and donors, to increase their commitment to HIV and AIDS prevention, care and treatment, among others. The six-day conference, which kicks off in Mexico on Sunday, will provide dialogue on the major challenges facing the global response to AIDS. Chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, including scientists, researchers and civil society, will attend the 2008 International AIDS Conference. The conference will further promote strategies that will reduce stigmatisation and discrimination of people living with HIV and AIDS and those working professionally to respond to the disease. Some of the issues to be explored during the conference include stigma, setting regional policy agendas, using what is gained and expanding it to other regions. The conference is expected to reach a wider audience through the web casting of proceedings to regional sub-conferences and through the availability of conference sessions online. It will also address the synergy of treatment and prevention, treatment as a tool for prevention and respect and promotion of human rights and gender equality. Key research findings, lessons learned and gaps in knowledge including best practice would be acknowledged and shared during the conference. The conference will also highlight the successes and shortfalls in the overall response to HIV and AIDS and identifies priorities for future actions. Speaking on Thursday ahead of the conference, Health Department Chief Director HIV and AIDS, Dr Nomonde Xundu said the conference will provide an opportunity for the countries to share knowledge and experiences on managing the disease. "South Africa will showcase the work of what we've done in managing the disease and we are looking forward to share some of the experiences and learn from other countries experienced the epidemic," said Dr Xundu. - BuaNews |
