Title: Pupils, workers urged to attend govt info sessions
--------------------

Mbizana - High school pupils, employers, workers and the public in general have been urged to attend the career guidance and labour-related information sessions which are to be held in schools in the Eastern Cape.

The Department of Labour, in partnership with the Department of Education and the Mbizana Municipality, will host the workshops to assist Grade 11 and 12 learners make informed decisions about their careers.

Departmental spokesperson Page Boikanyo said the career guidance workshops would also afford them an opportunity to interact directly with those in the corporate world to find answers to questions about academic institutions.

"Lack of information about career choices often leads to young people not making informed decisions about which careers to follow, while school leavers become unaware of the opportunities out there that are available for them," Mr Boikanyo said.

The information sessions will include presentations on Compensation on Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) and Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

Working residents and employers will hear more about the benefits of UIF and about compensation in the event of injuries or having contracted a disease as a result of work.

According to the programme, an on-the-spot service will help deal with stakeholder's queries.

The Unemployment Insurance Act and Unemployment Insurance Contributions Act apply to all employers and workers, but not to workers working less than 24 hours a month for an employer.

With regard to Compensation Fund, the department emphasised that the Occupational Health and Safety Act requires employers to bring about and maintain a reasonable practicable work environment that is safe and without risk to the health of the workers. - BuaNews
