Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System Date: 01 Sep 2008 Title: Chinese artists to tour South Africa -------------------- By Nthambeleni Gabara Pretoria - The Chinese Chongqing Artistic Troupe is expected to tour South Africa as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Africa and China. On Tuesday, the Chongqing Artistic Troupe will be officially welcomed by a senior official of the Department of Arts and Culture at the State Theatre in Pretoria. The Chongqing Artistic Troupe, which comes from the city of Chongqing in China, is comprised of a combination of acrobatic, folk traditional and opera performers. Each group would be led by some of China's most respected artists in their respective disciplines, including an acrobatic team who has won international awards in the past. The event provides an opportunity to showcase the rich Chinese culture and consolidate cultural relations between the two countries. The Chongqing Artistic Troupe will also be performing in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. One of Eastern Europe's world renowned dance company, the Bolshoi Ballet Theatre will also visit the country earlier this month. As part of the cultural exchange programme between the two countries, Minister of Arts and Culture, Pallo Jordan invited the dance company to celebrate the theme of "Our Dance, Our Heritage" during Heritage Month. The Bolshoi Ballet Theatre Company will stage two special performances at the State Theatre in Pretoria on 13 and 14 September. It will be headed by Belarus's First Deputy Minister of Culture, Vladimir Rytlako. Also in the high level delegation will be the artistic director, Valentin Yelizariev who is the most renowned choreographer in Belarus. Significantly, the 100-member strong dance company will be made up of the "creme de la creme" of their dancers. Among the young ballet group will be 30 soloists, many of whom have honorary titles and are well known outside Belarus. "The world renowned Ballet Theatre is a highly acclaimed professional ballet group and is awe inspiring to watch. "We are delighted that they will be visiting our country during Heritage Month when we shall be highlighting and celebrating dance as part of our national heritage," said Ms Jordan. Their repertoire will include ballets of different epochs and styles, depicting pieces from various famous suites, such as "Nutcracker", "Swan Lake", "Sleeping Beauty", "Giselle" and "Don Quixote" to name a few.
