Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System Date: 17 Sep 2008 Title: SABC to embark on voter education campaign -------------------- By Nthambeleni Gabara Johannesburg - The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is to embark on a voter education campaign to encourage young people to make their voices heard in the 2009 General Elections. According to the SABC Education Editor, Pontsho Makhetha, the voter education awareness campaign is a partnership between the SABC Education and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). Ms Makhetha made the announcement on Wednesday at the launch of the 2009 provincial and national elections. "SABC Education, in partnership with the IEC, has reached the second phase of their ID Ur-Self Now! campaign, which is the voter education awareness campaign," she said. The voter education campaign aimed at ensuring maximum participation of the younger generation in the coming general elections will be staged in two phases - the schools outreach campaign also known as the "ID Ur-Self Now! Campaign and the voter registration democracy education drive. "We've completed five road shows and other multi-media projects supporting the ID Ur-Self Now! Campaign. "Through various projects, we will create awareness, inform and educate the youth as well as the general public about the importance of voter education," she said. The projects, according to Ms Makhetha, include campus outreach programmes, comprehensive radio talk shows on voter and democracy education, dramas, youth magazine as well as youth for democracy to motivate youth about participation in the upcoming elections. IEC Chief Electoral Officer, Pansy Tlakula said SABC Education will manage the full term of the project. She said civic and voter education campaigns have already started across the country's nine provinces. "Field workers in provinces have begun attending and presenting at various community meetings since the beginning of this month. "In certain instances, we are contracting civil society organisations to target certain communities with regard to the mass education campaigns," she said. Ms Tlakula said the slogan for the 2009 General Elections "To the Future", is a call to action for the nation to move towards a better future. The new logo, which was also launched on Wednesday, intends to call South Africans, young and old, to register and vote in the upcoming General Elections to ensure that everyone participates in the crafting of the future of the country for the coming generations. The 2009 Election logo was designed by IEC official, Collen Coleman. The figure in the logo, according to him, represents the continuous growth of South Africa with its diverse and vibrant cultures. - BuaNews |
