Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System Date: 22 Sep 2008 Title: Title deeds to be handed over to impoverished Limpopo families -------------------- By Nthambeleni Gabara Polokwane - Limpopo MEC for Local Government and Housing, Maite Nkoana Mashabane is expected to hand over 1 900 title deeds to beneficiaries of the Lepelle-Nkumpi local municipality on Tuesday. Departmental spokesperson, Clayson Monyela told BuaNews the initiative was in line with the Housing Act of 1997. The Act makes a provision for a housing code which elaborates the transfer of ownership of government owned residential properties in townships to approved needy families. The housing code introduced the Enhanced Extended Discount Benefit Scheme which aims to facilitate the transfer of public housing stock to qualifying beneficiaries. The shift in housing policy from the pre-1994 housing era provided historically disadvantaged communities with 99 years lease agreement scheme while rental of property meant that residents could not become owners of property. "As the department we will in the spirit of Business Unusual, brought about change in the lives of the impoverished people Lepelle-Nkumpi in the Capricorn District," he said. In Limpopo Province, a total of 3327 title deeds have been handed over to needy beneficiaries under the Discount Benefit Scheme during the financial year 2008/9. Last month, the MEC handed over 814 title deeds to beneficiaries in Mopani District, with 326 being handed over to beneficiaries from Nkowankowa and the remaining to impoverished families from Lenyenye. - BuaNews |
