Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System Date: 10 Oct 2008 Title: Mpuma Executive Council pay tribute to bus victims -------------------- By Edwin Tshivhidzo, tel: (012) 314-2454 Nelspruit - The Mpumalanga Executive Council on Friday observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims of a tragic bus accident which claimed the lives of 30 passengers. The accident happened on Tuesday evening in Mkhondo municipality (Piet Retief) next to the Mahlathini border between Swaziland and South Africa. It is alleged that the accident happened when the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. The exact cause of the accident is not yet known. The Council expressed its deepest condolences and sympathy to the affected families and wished the injured a timeous recovery. It also expressed its appreciation to all traffic law enforcement officers, health workers (both public and private) and business sectors who worked tirelessly to assist those who have been affected. On Thursday Cabinet Ministers also sent their condolences to the families and friends of those who died in the accident. Those who were slightly injured were admitted at the Piet Retief Hospital. Ten passengers were slightly injured and twelve were reported to be in a serious condition. The Council also noted the unfortunate tragedy in which nine lives were lost following an air crash that happened in the Barberton area on Sunday. It was believed that the private aircraft that went missing was a ten seater Norman Britton Islander, which carried nine passengers and a pilot. According to investigations the aircraft was fuelled at the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport at 15:15pm and was on its way to Bloemfontein. "On behalf of the community and provincial government of Mpumalanga, we share our sympathy and mourn in solidarity with those who lost their loved ones and next of kins," the Council said in a statement. - BuaNews |
