Title: Over 100 new prosecutors to assist SA's courts
--------------------

By Proffesor Ndawonde

Pretoria - About 130 new prosecutors will now be able to assist South Africa's crime-fighting arsenal by competently prosecuting cases in courts.

The candidates, who have recently graduated from the Aspirant Prosecutor Program, will be deployed at various National Prosecution Authority (NPA) offices across the country.

The NPA said it was confident that the new prosecutors will carry out their duties with due diligence, subject to the laws of South Africa and the Constitution.

"The NPA trust that they [prosecutors] will add value and collaborate with all partners in the Criminal Justice system and the communities and contribute towards preventing and solving crime in all its manifestation.

"We trust they will prosecute without fear, favour or prejudice pursuant to ensuring that there is justice in our society so that people can live in freedom and security," the NPA said in a statement on Friday.

The NPA said it has committed itself to the strategic goals of increasing access to justice and improving service delivery by contributing towards dispensing justice without delay.

Since its inception in 1997, the Aspirant Prosecutor Program has produced at least 1000 prosecutors.

The NPA said the program aims at addressing the challenge of growth and capacity-building within the organisation.

According to the NPA, the program has seen a steady increase of the numbers candidates enrolled over the past years.

In 2001 the program had only 70 candidates however in 2003 the figure rose to 100.

The candidates who made it onto the program were selected on the basis of satisfying minimum entrance requirements in terms of the program.

"Commencing on the first workday of February each year, the program runs for eight months within which period, candidates have to prove their worth as they go through functional training that is followed by technical evaluation," the NPA explains.

There are currently 15 training centres countrywide with at least one center in each province and five additional centres will be operational when the next group undergoes training in February 2009. - BuaNews
