Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System Date: 14 Oct 2008 Title: KwaZulu-Natal govt pledges to fight corruption -------------------- By Siboniso Ntuli Durban - The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government committed to fighting corruption in all spheres of government by signing an anti-corruption pledge on Monday. The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Sbu Ndebele, Director General Dr Kwazi Mbanjwa, MECs and Heads of Departments (HODs) signed the pledge after the launch of the provincial Anti-Corruption Strategy at the Anti-Corruption Summit in Durban. The strategy, which focuses on the causes of fraud and corruption, seeks to establish a systematic approach to counter corruption by using the various institutions and mechanisms available to the provincial government. By signing the pledge, all delegated committed to implementing the strategy in all structures and levels and would not tolerate fraud and corruption. They further promised to embrace and acknowledge the contribution of all employees and members of the public who assist in the combating and prosecuting of fraudsters and corrupt officials. Premier Ndebele said the provincial government expects all members of the legislature, employees, consultants, contractors and service users not only to be fair and honest, but also to provide the help, information and support necessary to deal with fraud and corruption. "The provincial government commits itself to the prevention, detection and investigation of all forms of fraud and corruption, whether they are attempted from with or external to the organs of state. "Therefore we need to have a properly resourced and implemented proactive and reactive strategy," Mr Ndebele said. Some of the objectives of the anti-corruption strategy include institutionalising provincial government policies and strategies to minimise and prevent fraud and corruption and the risk of the occurrence. It also aims to integrate fraud and corruption combating, preventive and management measures of the various provincial departments and public entities through the strategy, guidelines and codes of good practice and good conduct. The strategy will also give guidance to provincial departments and public entities in their efforts to develop and revise their fraud and corruption plans, prevent, detect and report fraudulent and corrupt activities as well as create a culture of ethical behaviour. It also focuses on the strengthening of the provincial state law advisory services (SLAS) component and extending its mandate to include giving assistance to the anti-corruption committee as well its sub-committee in all relevant legislation. - BuaNews |
