Title: Mpumalanga centenarians to be honoured

By Sydney Masinga

Middleburg - Mpumalanga residents who are 100 years or older will be honoured for their contribution to South Africa's development and society as a whole.

The South African Social Services Agency (SASSA) in Mpumalanga will honour the centenarians at a function in Middelburg on Friday.

The event will take place at the Eric Jiyane community hall in Mhluzi informal settlement outside Middleburg between 10am and noon.

SASSA spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Senzeni Ngubeni said they wanted to show the elderly that they are loved, appreciated, cherished and valued for their contribution and wisdom.

He said it was this wisdom which strengthened family values in the province and without it the country would not be able to build a stable nation.

The elderly nurture families, provide protection and ensure the survival of communities. "Many older people use a large part of their pension income to provide food and school fees for grandchildren and care for orphans, especially those that are affected and infected by HIV and AIDS."

Mr Ngubeni said many elderly people had play key roles in the struggle for democracy and equality, and they continued to contribute to building the new South Africa.

"Through the sacrifices of men and women, both alive and dead like the late Oliver Tambo, the late Govan Mbeki, the late Lillian Ngoyi, Walter Sisulu, and many more, South Africa is now a proud part of the free and democratic community of nations.

"It enjoys freedom and democracy thanks to their supreme sacrifices of our elders," Ngubeni said.

The event forms part of Social Development Month and involves bus companies BUSCOR and MIDBANK, as well as Xstrata Coal, the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality and the Nkangala District Municipality.

SASSA is responsible for the administration and payment of social assistance grants. Those who would like to find out if they qualify for a social grants may call the toll free number 0800 60 10 11. - BuaNews
