Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System Date: 19 Nov 2008 Title: Workshop held between IEC, journalists -------------------- By Kagiso Metswamere Mafikeng - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the North West is hosting a media workshop in an attempt to ensure accuracy when reporting on next year's elections and that information about electoral processes is spread to communities. IEC Provincial Electoral Officer, Tumelo Thiba said on Wednesday that they wanted to interact with the media ahead of next years elections to ensure the message of electoral democracy is spread through the media. "The media plays an important role during the election period and as the IEC we see it as important to host these dialogues. We want to make sure that the media have a better understanding of the electoral processes and also mention their difficulty when working during this period," she said. She said members of different communities needed to know about the changes that occur within the IEC and it was only through the media that such information could be spread. "We have registration taking place just before the 2009 election and we also have new information such as the date of the election to be announced. "We want to have such information spread accurately to members of the community thought the media and also want to ensure that every change within our office is communicated well to the public," she said. The workshop was also attended by various representatives of the political parties, government communicators and community leaders. More than 3.6 million South Africans in total visited the stations to register for the first time, re-register after a change in address or inspect their details on the voter's roll. There are now over 21.6 million South Africans on the IEC's voters' roll. In the provinces, KwaZulu-Natal had the highest number of new registrations with 451 0300, followed by Gauteng with 369 623 and the Eastern Cape with 193 444.
