Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System Date: 14 Jan 2009 Title: South Africans urged to collect their IDs -------------------- By Nthambeleni Gabara Pretoria - South Africans who have applied for Identity Documents (IDs) in the past three months are urged to visit their nearest Home Affairs offices to collect their IDs. The department's Communications Chief Director, Siobhan McCarthy on Tuesday told BuaNews there are over 300 000 uncollected IDs in their offices. "We are urging South Africans to collect their IDs so that they can be able to register in the second chance to register to vote during the upcoming General Elections. "As a department, we normally send SMSs to the applicants when their IDs are ready," she said. According to Ms McCarthy, 200 000 of the uncollected IDs are new applications made in the last three months of 2008. The leading province with the highest number of uncollected IDs according to the department is KwaZulu-Natal with 76 000, followed by Gauteng with 68 000. Both the East and Western Cape provinces have 30 000 uncollected IDs respectively. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) recently announced the weekend of 7 February 2009 as the second chance for voters to register to vote in the upcoming General Elections. Last year, the IEC scheduled 8 and 9 November as a voter registration weekend across the country's nine provinces. - BuaNews |
