Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System Date: 21 Jan 2009 Title: IEC makes final preparations for registration weekend -------------------- By Nthambeleni Gabara Pretoria - Preparations for the final voter registration weekend are at an advanced stage in terms of logistics, says the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). IEC Chief Executive Officer, Kate Bapela, told BuaNews on Wednesday that materials were at present being distributed from provincial warehouses to local storage where they will be distributed to voter registration stations. She said the 60 000 staff members who will be deployed at the 20 000 voting stations have been appointed and trained. "Preparations for the upcoming voter registration are at an advanced stage in terms of election related logistics. We are ready," she said. The weekend of 7 and 8 February will be the last chance for voters to register for the 2009 elections. The date for the lections is yet to be announced by President Kgalema Motlanthe. In the first round of voter registration, which took place last November, a total of 1.6 million South Africans registered to vote and more than 3.6 million South Africans in total visited the stations to register for the first time, re-register after a change in address or inspect their details on the voter's roll. There are now over 21.6 million South Africans on the IEC's voters' roll. Young people also took note of the IEC's call to register, with 77.9 percent of all new registrations falling in the youth category. "This is the last chance for voters to register at their voting stations for the 2009 elections. First time voters have the opportunity to register, while voters who have moved house should re-register in the voting district where they now live," she said. Ms Bapela urged voters to call the IEC toll free number 0800 11 8000 to check where their respective voting stations will be.
