Title: Gaddafi calls for AU Summit in Sept
--------------------

By Bathandwa mbola

Sirte - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi on Friday called for a special African Union Summit in early September to coincide with the 40th anniversary of his rise to power.

President Gaddafi, who is the current chairperson of the African Union, made the proposal during the last day of the 13th AU summit in Sirte, Libya.

He explained that the meeting would be held to coincide with the rise to power of the Libyan "Guide" on 1 September 1969, after King Idriss was overthrown.

His proposal, which received the support of the African Union Commission, was that the summit be devoted to resolving conflicts in Africa as well as the continent's response to the International Criminal Court' indictment of Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir for alleged war crimes.

Under President Gaddafi, Sirte, his hometown, has been developed into a sprawling complex of conference halls wedged between the desert and the Mediterranean. It is a six-hour drive from the capital Tripoli. - BuaNews
