Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System --------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 24 Nov 2005 Title: Prayer service held to end violence and abuse --------------------------------------------------------------- By Edwin Tshivhidzo, tel: (012) 314-2454 Government in partnership with faith-based organisations held a prayer service to end violence against women and children, in Pretoria today. The service came on the eve of the launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign which starts tomorrow and ends on 10 December. The campaign focuses on mobilising all sectors of society to put an end to violence directed at women and children. Speaking at the event, Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour said government alone could not win the battle against violence on women and children. "Collaboration by all sectors of society plays a role in building better, well rounded and balanced individuals who strongly reject violence and abuse. "As an age-old tradition, before any step a society or an individual ventures in, we need to call on the supernatural being to give wisdom, guidance and blessings to ensure success," he said. The 16 Days campaign has received overwhelming support from government and all sectors of society. The campaign will kick-off tomorrow with a torch of peace being lit by Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka in Katlehong, on the East Rand, to symbolise the official launch. The torch of peace will be located at the Union Buildings for the duration of the campaign. Thereafter it will be handed to Transport Minister Jeff Radebe for the December Arrive Alive road safety campaign. In January, Education Minister Naledi Pandor will receive the torch to mark the start of the 2007 school calendar. People are urged to pledge their support by signing the campaign postcard and posting it via free mail or by sending an SMS. SMS the words "16 days" to the number 316 16. Each SMS costs R5. This year's campaign will see various government ministers deployed to different areas to spread the message of non-violence and to urge men and women to speak up against abuse. - BuaNews |
