Title: Mayor rallies city behind world cup project
---------------------------------------------------------------

By Chris Khumalo

Durban - eThekwini Mayor Obed Mlaba has called on everyone in Durban to support the city's leadership in hosting the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Mr Mlaba, who has just returned from a visit to Germany that hosted the 2006 World Cup, was addressing political party heads at a meeting of the eThekwini Municipality's executive committee in Durban today.

Mr Mlaba, who was accompanied by Municipal Manager Mike Sutcliffe, spoke about the enormity of the event.

He said some fans flocked to Germany from around the world but never got into stadiums and instead watched matches on giant screens.

"We must begin to show leadership in this city, because what we will receive in about four years will be of such great benefit," he said.

His trip revealed that security was a major concern, although there appeared to be crime wherever the event took place.

Mr Mlaba said while in Germany some South Africans were victims of robbery after their hotel rooms were broken into but this was not reported in any of the German newspapers.

eThekwini, which recently unveiled plans for an iconic 70 000-seater stadium to host several matches during the World Cup, has also announced plans to build a giant beachfront fan zone, an underground parking lot and a tram to transport football fans.

The plans include transforming the entire beachfront from uShaka Marine World to Blue Lagoon into a world cup fan zone, building underground parking for hundreds of cars at the beach end of West Street and a tram system to back up the long-awaited "People Mover" inner city public transport system.

The beachfront fan zone will have direct pedestrian access to the newly landscaped beach on the site of the old Seaworld and Lido. - BuaNews
