Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System --------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 12 Oct 2006 Title: SA to hold world congress for rural women --------------------------------------------------------------- By Nozipho Dlamini, tel: (012) 314-2214 Cabinet has welcomed the opportunity for South Africa to host the 4th World Congress on Rural Women. Addressing the media on Wednesday in Cape Town, government spokesperson James Maseko said the congress would go a long way towards advancing the cause of rural women, particularly in the developing world. "It is yet another indication that the world has confidence in the country's ability to host major international events," said Mr Maseko, following a Cabinet meeting. The decision to host the congress in Africa was taken at the last congress meeting in Australia in 2002. It is aimed at providing a global perspective on issues confronting women in the world's rural areas, with a wide cross section of speakers making presentations on diverse issues. Cabinet also approved the National Drug Master Plan (2006/11) for implementation. The Plan outlines government's strategy and programme to fight the scourge of drug abuse in the country. It is in line with the Treatment of Drug Dependency Act 20 of 1992, which requires government to review and implement such a plan every five years. Government further noted that preparations for the 16 Days Campaign of No Violence Against Women and Children were proceeding well. The campaign starts on 25 November and ends on 10 December yearly. This time it will start in Limpopo and end in the Northern Cape. "Members of the public are invited to support all the activities that will ensure that we all stand together in defence of our women and children," said Mr Maseko. Among other things, the campaign encourages victims of abuse or violence to report such incidences to their nearest police stations. Furthermore it focuses on mobilising all sectors of society to put an end to violence directed at women and children. - BuaNews |
