Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System --------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 26 Nov 2007 Title: Mandela named Mo Ibrahim Honorary Laureate --------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------- Egypt - Former President Nelson Mandela is to be named Honorary Laureate of the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership on Monday. The award will be officially announced at a gala ceremony at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt. Mobile phone entrepreneur Mo Ibrahim unveiled the prize aimed at rating governance in 53 African countries each year. The contest was launched in London in October 2006 and awards winners $5 million for the following 10 years after the win and a further $200,000 a year thereafter for the rest of their life. Projects the winner supports receives up to $200,000 annually over the next decade. Dr Ibrahaim said: "Nelson Mandela stands as an inspiration, in South Africa and throughout the world, to all who share his devotion to democracy and equality. "In presenting this Laureate, the foundation would like to celebrate his extraordinary achievements and support the important work of the foundations he has established." In recognition of the award, the foundation is also making a grant to the four organisations carrying on the work of Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel. These include the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Mandela Rhodes Foundation and the Foundation for Community Development in Mozambique. In a statement, Mandela said he was proud to be the Foundation's Honorary Laureate. "We accept it on behalf of all those across the continent, and indeed the world, who made it possible for us to stand here, today." In October Joaquim Chissano , the former President of Mozambique, was announced as this year's inaugural of the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership. According to media reports, Mr Chissano won the prize for his achievements in bringing peace, reconciliation, stable democracy and economic progress to his country. Kofi Annan, the former United Nations Secretary General leads the award panel of the foundation. - BuaNews-NNN |
