Nelson Mandela Bay - After being named African City of the Year, the Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan municipality is to see an increase in the number of tourists attracted to the area.

The Eastern Cape metropole received the international award at the World Leadership Awards 2007 held in London recently.

"The name Nelson Mandela Bay will continue to travel around the world, and serve as an outstanding marketing tool for attracting tourists, as well as local and international investors," said Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Nondumiso Maphazi, congratulating all those who made winning the award possible.

"This has indeed proved that we as Council and the officials of Nelson Mandela Bay are committed to working with the people to improve their lives for the better.

"We thank the organisers of the World Leadership Awards for bestowing us these important awards. We have won these awards for the world, Africa, South Africa and our beautiful city, Nelson Mandela Bay, with all its residents."

The city also bagged an award in the health category for the Emmanuel Haven project.

Emmanuel Haven is a Christian response to HIV and AIDS in Motherwell and is made up of a research unit, an anti-retroviral unit, orphans club and Christian outreach programme.

The amazing project also includes the Emmanuel Haven FM Radio Station which focuses on health and faith issues, and the Emmanuel Haven Wellness Centre which has a hydroponics project to grow vegetables for those community members affected and infected by HIV and AIDS.

Other than providing employment, the purpose of the Emmanuel Haven Farms, is to generate funding for HIV and AIDS research and treatment.

The World Leadership Awards are given to cities whose leaders have shown exceptional imagination, foresight or resilience in a number of key fields, especially cities that have reversed trends, shaken off traditional images, and have acted as an example and inspiration to others.

The cities are judged on the following criteria; the quality of leadership displayed, the difficulties or obstacles that the city has overcome and the degree of inspiration that the city may give to others.

This announcement comes after the city scooped two National Vuna Awards for Local Economic Development and Service Delivery at the annual awards function earlier last week.

The Vuna Awards seek to promote a culture of performance measurement and bench-marking, as well as highlighting municipalities' best practices in service delivery. - BuaNews
