Compiled by the Government Communication and Information System Date: 09 Apr 2008 Title: Partnership between depts needed to rehabilitate offenders -------------------- By Siboniso Ntuli Pietermaritzburg - The Correctional Services Area Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal, Andile Mdletshe has urged other departments to aid correctional services in rehabilitating offenders to be reintegrated into society. "We as a department, cannot do this alone. We need a partnership with other government departments, municipalities, communities and members of the community," said Mr Mdletshe, adding that the department has moved away from the approach of locking offender's way, to one of rehabilitation. He was speaking during a tour of the New Prison Correctional Services in Pietermaritzburg by the MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Meshack Radebe. The visit forms part of government's Imbizo Week which kicked off on Monday. "By working together with these stakeholders we can make sure that the offenders are rehabilitated and the community accepts them again as the members of the community," said Mr Mdletshe. The visit also included a family day where the families of the offenders were able to spend the day with their loved ones. The MEC along with the Department of Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal and the Department of Correctional Services inspected the Hlengomuso Unit in the prison. "Offenders must not lose hope in life and think that it is the end of the world to be incarcerated. They must realise that there is much they can still do," said Dr Radebe. - BuaNews |
